I remember watching Liverpool games with so much joy and anticipation of great entertainment and a good result to go with it.
Liverpool I knew was a team that plays the ball with so much passion, flair and hits the ball so hard as though the ball was an enemy.
They were characterised as a team that usually have two rock solid centre backs, 2 attack minded wing backs, 2 wicked and intelligent defensive midfielders and free roaming attacking midfielder in front of them and they summarise it all with a deadly top striker who provides nothing less than 15goals a season.(Remember Micheal Owen and Torres?)
Liverpool back then, where often referred to as a champions League Team, in the sense that they perform so well in the said competition. Who wouldn't say that about them after seeing them destroy teams such as Barcelona, AC Milan, Arsenal and Chelsea at different occasions, not forgetting Real Madrid.
After the F A Cup victory over West Ham in 2006, many failed to imagine or see what was about to hitting the following world in years to come(2006 - date)
One thing lead to another and the team is now finds itself at the mercy of the current manager Rodgers to perform a miracle and restore them back to their glory days(which for me is still a long from becoming a reality).
Its unbelievable to say that Liverpool has not participated in the Uefa champions League for the past four(4) seasons now and are really looking like a team that won't be there come next season.
Its so sad to say this but its true, Liverpool is the only club in the premier League maybe after them Chelsea, to have spent a lot of money in different transfer windows and under different managers on purchasing players who are not good enough for the club. Players which people in my country refer to as "PIPES" and in that list we have the following players, Charlie Adams, Ngog, Diuof, Christian Poulsen, Jovanovic, Konchesky, Henderson, Downing to mention a few.
Just like myself, so many Liverpool fans are also looking for answers as to where their beloved club got it all wrong. Below are what some Liverpool fans have to say;
"I just cant help but take a look back. Just a couple of years ago we had a team with Torres, Gerrard, alonso, mascherano. All that team needed was a good winger and backup striker. How did it end up this bad. I mean i just don't get it. Yes we missed out on CL qualification once but that doesn't mean we should sell or lose all our best players. Even Arbeloa was allowed to leave for a mere £5m. We let Riise go. It is very depressing. We have gone back in our progression. I will say we are back to the 2004 time when Rafa took over and the bad part now is CL is a lot more difficult to get in. We need to be more like Ruthless like Daniel Levy and demand ridiculous fees for our best players or keep them. Mascherano for a mere £20m still baffles me when a season before we could have gotten £30m at least. Hope we don't repeat this same mistake again"
"When Kenny blew the transfer budget on massively overpriced players who turned out to be even worse than we feared"
"It started of with H&G saddling debt onto the club.
Then Rafa was sacked.
Roy was appointed.
Kenny was sacked.
With all the uncertainty around the club, players left and were not replaced adequately".
"Moores sold the club to respected American businessmen who only wanted the best for the club, yet sadly, wearing their hearts on their sleeves, were not able to achieve what they intended.......
Well, wherever you are, Gilette and Hicks, I salute you."
To add my own I will say Liverpool got it wrong when they appointed Sammy Lee as their assistant Manger.
LIVERPOOL SO FAR 2012/2013 SEASON.
Liverpool have taken six points from seven Premier League games under Brendan Rodgers. They find themselves down in 14th place and with the critics already circling.Even the most blinkered Liverpool fan would agree this represents a disappointing start to the season. As new dawns go, Rodgers' sunrise has hardly had us squinting in its glare.
I wonder what the future holds for Brendan Rogers and Liverpool fc...
