Newcastle arrived Old Trafford fully aware that United have not lost a Boxing day fixture in the last 10 years and they themselves haven't won either at Old traford for over 18 years.
It was an entertaining game of football, which saw both teams playing end to end football, with Robin Van persie having a hand in everything good for United, a sight which didn't go too well with the Newcastle fans who wished He wasn't on the pitch after the Incident between Him and Williams in the Swansea game.
United started well regaining possession from the Magpies and immediately Robin van Persie looked to switch one over for Antonio Valencia, but it was a rare miss for the Dutchman as his delivery bounced out for a goal kick. Newcastle United scored only a minute later after Michael Carrick gave possession away to allow Demba Ba to run through on goal and shoot. David De Gea managed the save but parried the ball into the path of James Perch, who but the visitors 0-1 up at Old Trafford. Not a great start yet again having to chase the game.
United launched a counter attack with Javier Hernandez making a brilliant run down the wing before putting a really dangerous delivery, but there was nobody in the box to make the shot and Newcastle watch the ball go out for a goal kick. Ryan Giggs then produced a brilliant display as he clipped and lofted a pass over the top of the Newcastle defence, but there was too much pace on the ball for Valencia to keep it in play. Giggs had three team-mates in the box unmarked!
Demba Ba was today playing really well, he ran down the wing cutting inside Rio Ferdinand and worked himself a shooting opportunity, he didn’t quite get the right connection and the ball was blocked at the edge of the area. United won a free-kick as Williamson lead with his elbow in an aerial challenge, United played the set-piece backwards towards De Gea. United are having most of the possession so far in the match, but its the goals that mean more than the possession.
United levelled with a goal from Jonny Evans as Tim Krul could only turn the ball into Evans path after a Robin van Persie free kick, which led to a flick on by Giggs and a close-range shot by Hernandez. It didn’t last long though with United going 2-1 down courtesy of Jonny Evans with an own goal. Demba Ba was offside when the ball was played but it came off Evans and into the goal. The linesman waved the flag for no goal but Mike Dean overruled it. Newcastle now lead 1-2 at Old Trafford.
United tried to level the match again but in their attempts to do that Jonny Evans and Javier Hernandez end up getting yellow cards for fouls. The first half ended with Newcastle still leading 2-1 over United. Surely Fergie’s hairdryer would be plugged in and ready to go for the interval.
Hernandez gets in behind the Newcastle defence before racing through on goal, but his run is brought to a premature end as the linesman’s flag goes up for offside. It is a bit of a scrappy second half with the ball becoming bogged down in the centre of the pitch. Newcastle go on the attack with Ba and Cisse. Ba crosses to Cisse but he failed to get anything on the ball. Valencia was then given a yellow card as he went right through Danny Simpson. Hernandez collided with Coloccini and wanted a penalty but the referee doesn’t give it.
Jonny Evans put the ball over the top right through to Tim Krul, which has the United supporters hoping for more. United regain possession and United pull themselves level fr the second time in the match through a weak shot by Patrice Evra. The United left-back scores his second goal in as many matches for United.
Danny Simpson gets a yellow card for a late challenge on Jonny Evans. Minutes later Demba Ba gets a yellow for his challenge on Patrice Evra. United are surely back in the match, they just need to keep their composure. Chris Smalling has a shot on goal which goes out for a corner. Robin van Persie takes the corner but it was cleared. United were still attacking though. Gabriel Obertan replaces Gael Bigirimana for Newcastle United.
Gabriel Obertan was attacking on the wing and crossed the ball into Papiss Cisse who ran and shot into the back of the net. Newcastle now lead 3-2 at Old Trafford. Tom Cleverley replaced Paul Scholes to add some pace to the United midfield. United level again with a goal by Robin van Persie. Krul made the initial save but the Dutchman gets a second bite and makes no mistake. It’s 3-3 at Old Trafford.
Javier Hernandez had his chance to give United the lead but he never took his first chance and Newcastle had three defenders on the line to clear his efforts. United have a penalty appeal as Coloccini raises his arm and deflects the ball. Mike Dean says no penalty. Sir Alex is now having go at the fourth official about the decision.
Robin van Persie broke the Newcastle offside trap to run onto a clipped ball over the top, but his half-volley bounces a fraction wide of the post. It is still 3-3 but United are looking the better side right now. Valencia delivers a peach of a ball into the area to perfectly pick out Hernandez who was unmarked. The Mexican striker could not direct his diving header and the ball goes out for a goal kick. Sammy Amoebi replaces Papiss Cisse for Newcastle’s final substitution.
Robin van Persie curled the ball into the far post but there was nobody there and Newcastle watch the ball bounce out to safety. United are attacking very lively but cannot seem to get a shot into the back of the net. Hernandez got a ball into te box from Giggs and he headed it into Krul. Robin van Persie got his delivery and he headed the ball over the cross-bar. United were trying to settle the match, but nothing to change the score.
Javier Hernandez puts United in the lead for the first time in the match. United were 4-3 ahead and have surely won the match. Michael Carrick crossed the ball into the box for the Mexican striker, who was unmarked to strike home. Darren Fletcher replaced Javier Hernandez in injury time and United hanged on to collect all 3 points.
The victory took United seven point clear of rivals City who lost 1 - 0 to a Struggling Sunderland side.
Robin Van Persie scored his 13th premier League goal and United's third to show the Newcastle fans that the ball that struck him on the head didn't kill him rather it made Him stronger.
