TOP 10 CELEBRITY COUPLES IN MODERN DAY FOOTBALL

Football has turned out to become the most popular sports in the world not just because of the beautiful style of play on the pitch, or the passion associated with the sports but also for the celebrities involved in the beautiful game.
Soccer4life takes a look at the Top 10 celebrity couples in modern day Football.

1. Gerard Pique and shakira
There may be a decade between them, but with a child now on its way, age is only a number between the Barcelona stopper and Colombian songstress. Pique met Shakira in the spring of 2010 while preparing for the World Cup in South Africa. During that same period, the popstar was recording the official tournament song 'Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)'

2. David And Victoria Beckham

The benchmark for footballer-celebrity relations, David and Victoria began seeing each other after a charity match in 1997. "I didn't really know who he was, I wasn't into football," she remarked. She soon would be, as the Spice Girls enjoyed a sustained period of chart success worldwide and Manchester United dominated English football.

Having proposed to her in the modest Hertfordshire town of Cheshunt a year later, they wed to huge media interest, and since then have become one of the world's most powerful couples, with a joint-net worth of £125 million. David's move to LA Galaxy in 2007 catapulted the pair to new heights of fame in the United States.

Yet, they have had sufficient time to raise four children, and despite well-documented accusations of infidelity - David's former assistant Rebecca Loos the most notable party - 'Posh and Becks', as they are affectionately known, continue to reign supreme in an era of short-lived matrimony
3. Francesco Totti and Ilary Blasi
The No.10 has enjoyed a legendary career on the field, clocking up over 500 appearances for his boyhood club Roma, as well as lifting the World Cup with Italy in 2006. A large degree of his improved demeanour can be attributed to his loyal wedded wife Ilary, a former showgirl-turned-television personality. To many, they are the 'Italian Posh and Becks'.

The couple tied the knot on national television in June 2005, and Ilary gave birth to their first son Cristian in November of that year, and a daughter, Chanel, two years later. And to profess his undying affection for his spouse, Totti's signature thumb-sucking celebration, originally a form of tribute to his children, is now aimed at her. What a charmer!
4. Ashley Cole and Cheryl Cole
A new supercouple was threatening to emerge in 2004 when the Chelsea and England left-back married the Girls Aloud singer, and for a time it seemed that way, as Cole triumphed under the tutelage of Jose Mourinho for two seasons, while the Geordie native became an internationally-recognised popstar.
However, four years into their union, allegations that the defender had cheated on his wife with three different women had come to light. Although he protested his innocence, it proved the beginning of the end for the couple, as two years after an apparent reconciliation, Cole was accused of FOUR counts of adultery.

Again, a similar display of integrity followed, but it proved one step too far for his spouse, who separated and eventually divorced the stopper. Cue a string of alleged subliminal lyrics in some of her songs as a solo artist, but she still bears the surname Cole in her professional endeavours. Better than Tweedy then!
5.  Rafael Van der Vaart and Sylvie Van der vaart

The Hamburg midfielder hit the jackpot when he met fellow Dutch companion Sylvie Meis, a television personality and model, in 2003. Two years later, the pair married, with a first son Damian Rafael being born not long after. A glamorous couple, they have repeatedly underlined a desire to live out of the spotlight, dispelling comparisons with 'Posh and Becks'.

Their grounded nature could not be better explained than when Sylvie was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009. Her husband, who at the time was ready to leave Real Madrid following a lack of first-team opportunities, decided to stay put in order to give his spouse the best possible treatment in the Spanish capital.

The next summer, they both started a new life in London, as Van der Vaart spent two successful seasons with Tottenham, before returning to Germany this summer - again to aid Sylvie's burgeoning presenting career in the country.

6. Wayne Rooney and Coleen Rooney

The Manchester United striker married his childhood sweetheart (nee McLoughlin) in 2008 after six years of dating, but almost fell into problems prior to their wedding day, as he admitted he had previously solicited prostitution - an action he has since branded as a "naive mistake".

And despite confusion at the setting of 'Wayleen's vows - a church that was deemed not suitable for matrimony - along with libellous claims that he assaulted Coleen at a night club, the next loveable English couple appeared to be unfolding, which had been followed by the birth of a baby boy just a year after.

However, allegations of adultery, while his wife was five months pregnant, with an escort named Jennifer Thompson emerged in 2010, which would end on a sour note for Rooney on footballing terms. Still, she stuck by her man, and her new-found status has seen her find work in the English media. Al is well that ends well then.

7. Cristiano Ronaldo and Irina Shayk

Despite all the clamour surrounding his alleged unhappiness at Real Madrid, the Portuguese winger looks to have found some solace in beautiful Russian model Irina Shayk, who he has dated for the past two years since reportedly coming across her at an Armani Exchange campaign.

However, she is more than capable of standing on her own two feet, as she freely admits she is not interested in her boyfriend's playing career, having quipped: "I'm for sure not a fan of soccer." Nonetheless, she shares a close relationship with Ronaldo's two-year-old son Cristiano, meaning she should be a keeper.

Their display of passion at the Uefa Best Player in Europe award in August also served to dispel rumours that the duo were heading for the rocks, after a photograph of the 27-year-old with a television presenter was leaked - later established to have been taken long ago.

8. Wesley and Yolanthe Sneijder

Sneijder's five goals saw Netherlands reach the pinnacle of a first major tournament since 1988, as they eventually lost by a solitary goal to Spain in the 2010 World Cup final. However, rather than his exploits with Inter, could it have been the promise of marrying Dutch-Spanish actress Yolanthe Cabau that served him so well during the tournament?

We'll never know exactly, but six days after his unforgettable campaign, Sneijder returned to Italy to marry his girlfriend of only a year in Tuscany. Much like his compatriot Rafael, the midfielder's relationship with Yolanthe has found popularity with the masses. She even converted him into a Roman Catholic, albeit with the help of devout club-mate Javier Zanetti.

9.  Kevin Boateng and Melissa Satta
The US-born Italian may currently be in a relationship with the AC Milan ace, but she has previous. For five years, the model presenter had dated former Italy hotshot Christian Vieri, but broke the romance off. However, she soon found love again in the form of the 25-year-old, also recently single following a divorce, and the two have been together ever since.

However, his inconsistent form and sudden proneness to injury has been blamed on the beauty ever since her claim to Vanity Fair in January that his fitness was being affected by their sex drive: "The reason why he is always injured is because we have sex seven to ten times a week. I hate foreplay, I want to get straight to the point. My favourite position is on top so I can take control."

10. Jonathan Fbbro and Larissa Riquelme
As of 2010, Larissa Riquelme was Paraguay's highest-earning model. The same year, she courted global attention following her passionate display of support for her country's national team at the World Cup the same year, which she promised to run naked through Buenos Aires if they reached the semi-finals of the competition. Although, they never did, she still kept true to her vow in only body paint.

Voted the tournament's girlfriend by Marca and its most famous fan, Riquelme soon earned celebrity status and made the most of her popularity in footballing circles by dating Cerro Porteno talisman Jonathan Fabbro, who recently gained Paraguayan citzenship and lifted the Apertura title with Cerro Porteno - conveniently, her favourite club.

These couples have shown us that we can't only try to be like their celebrity selves but we can also be happy in relationships like them too.
