The news of the appointment of Rafa Benitez as the new Chelsea manger has not gone too well with Chelsea fans world wide and they have not be scared to display their annoyance and disapproval with the climax coming during their premiership clash between Manchester City at the Bridge where Sections of the Chelsea support held up banners against Benitez and they also stood and applauded in the 16th minute, which was Di Matteo's shirt number in his playing days.
Chelsea's stadium announcer was drowned out by jeers as he appealed for calm in order to pay tribute to former Chelsea boss Dave Sexton, whose death was confirmed on Sunday.
There were also expletive-laden chants of "you're not wanted here", and signs reading 'Benitez out' - coupled with songs and banners hailing the sacked Di Matteo.
Looking at it critically one has to ask the question are Chelsea fans actually sure they don't want Benitez, a proven Manager who has showed on many occasion that he doesn't operate based on luck nor sit on the passengers seat while the senior players in the team fill up the driver's seat?
Or is it just a case of the rivary between Coca cola and Pepsi where the lovers of Pepsi can't watch the management employ someone who has once had any connection with Coca cola even though he has a better resume than the person they want to replace?.
The fans and followers of the game who are following the situation at Chelsea with emotion and sentiment maybe upset with the way Roman Abramovich fires and hire managers. But in business if you want to continue operating at the highest level you have to do a board shake up once in a while especially when you know there is someone better out there.
Benitez who have coached high profile clubs such as Valencia and Liverpool and have also won major trophies and can boast of bringing players like Xbi Alonso, Luis Garcia and Fedinando Torres to the spot light may as well be the best person to handle the current crop of players at Chelsea with his ability of being able to bring out the best in any player no matter his quality.
Benitez was quoted saying during his pre - match conference as Chelsea coach "I analysed the squad. Can they win trophies? Yes. How many trophies can they win? We have five opportunities. OK. Carry on - It is very simple. Winning games is a guarantee for everything. If you do it in a row you can win trophies. I'm really happy to be here in the Premier League with a chance to win trophies. Perfect,”It suggests that he’s happy with the squad and the attacking options Chelsea already have so don’t expect tens of millions to be spent by the club any time soon
Chelsea fans may claim not to want the services of their new boss, but Rafa Benitez is not moved by any of that as he got his mind focused on the mission he has been brought in to carryout.
Will he win the fans over to his side.......? Only time will tell.
