Mark Clattenburg has become a popular figure in the
English game in recent time because of the famous role he played in the game
between Chelsea and Manchester United at Stamford bridge.
Not just because of the controversial decisions He made
on that day but He has been accused of airing racial slur at Chelsea’s John Obi
Mikel.
Mark Clattenburg sudden rise to stardom has triggered
Soccer4life to dig deep to discover who he really is.
Mark Clattenburg is an English professional football referee, who
officiates primarily in the English premier League and for Fifa.
He was born in Consett, county Durham, but he now lives
in Newcastle upon Tyne.
Clattenburg has refereed a number of notable matches,
including the Football League Cup final in Feb 2012 and the 2012 Olympics men’s
tournament final in August 2012.
Clattenburg became a Fifa referee in 2006 at the age of
30.
He refereed Alan Shearer’s testimonial match on 11 march
2006. He is a Newcastle fan and does not referee competitive games involving
Newcastle United.
Mark Clattenburg was suspended in 2008 from refereeing
pending an investigation into alleged debts incurred by companies to which he
was connected.
Following investigation into His personal life and
business debt, the Referee’s Governing Body dismissed Him citing a breach of
contract.
Mark Clattenburg denied all the allegation and appealed
the decision. On Feb 2009 the Professional Game Match Official Board
reinstalled Him as a select Group of Referee.
However he had to serve an eight(8) months suspension
starting from his original suspension date of August 6 2008. Upon his return
from suspension on the last day of the season, Clattenburg refereed the fixture
between Manchester city and Bolton wanderers.
His only participation in the Fifa world cup was in 2010,
where he acted as a fourth official for the 2010 world cup qualifying group 4
match between Azerbaijan and Russia in Baku on 14 October 2009.
Mark Clattenburg is not new to criticism. In 2007, three
years after his premier League debut, Clattenburg came in for arguably his
fiercest criticism of his Refereeing following the Merseyside derby between Everton
and Liverpool.
The 1st being awarding a penalty kick for an
apparent professional foul on Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard by Tony Hibbert. Mark
Clattenburg initially took out his yellow card seeming to book Hilbert, but
after an interaction albeit brief with Steven Gerrard, Clattenburg changed his
mind and showed Tony Hibbert a red card.
Secondly, He later elected not to dismiss Dirk Kuyt for a
waist high lunge at Phi Neville.
Finally, He declined to Everton’s appeal for a penalty in
the third minute of injury time with the score at 1 – 2, when Jamie Carragher
appeared to have fouled Joleon Lescott inside the Liverpool penalty area.
After the game Mark Clattenburg was appointed not to referee
another Everton match until 2012.
In 2009, Clattenburg took charge of a tie between Man
city and Bolton. City personnel alleged that at half time Clattenburg asked the
member of the bench “How do you work with Craig Bellamy all week”?
In the second half that followed he booked Bellamy twice,
once for dissent and the other for diving although replays suggested he was
actually fouled.
Clattenburg has also encountered controversy when officiating
two fixtures between Man Utd and Tottenham, one in 2005 when Pedro Mendes long
range shot was fumbled over the goal line by Roy Carroll and the second being
5yrs later in 2010, when Nani tapped the ball into the net while spurs goal
keeper Heurelho Gomes believed his team had a free kick.
On October 28, 2012. Chelsea made a formal complaint to
the football Association against Clattenburg about his alleged use of
inappropriate language towards Mikel Obi during the Day’s match of the day
between Chelsea and Manchester United.
It is also believed that after the game some Chelsea
staff and players including Mikel entered the referee’s dressing room and a
confrontation took place. The “Extra ordinary” post match incident is said to
form part of the referee’s standard match report to the FA. The FA and police
investigation are currently on going.
One no longer has to wonder why Mark Clattenburg
is making the Headline in recent weeks, He no doubt has enough in His Arsenal
to make a good story for the media and fans world wide
